3D printing a part for my van

Hi,

I’m trying to find a way to create a plastic part for my van (actually 3
copies of the same part). It’s for the wheels and it the plastic part of
the hubcap that screws into the wheel itself. When I bought the wheels
only one of these parts were complete, the rest have all been proken losing
the threaded part.

I’ve toyed with trying to make a rubber mould on the part and casting it in
plastic and then wondered if it was the sort of thing that could be 3D
printed? I have never use a 3D printer or CAD before but I’m generally
technical both mechanically and with software (developer is my day job).

So really I’m reaching out for advice, is this something possible? Is 3D
printing the totally wrong way to be looking? Does anyone have ideas or
advice?

Here’s a picture of the part:

John,

What you are proposing appears possible. Printing the thread is sometimes a
bit hit and miss but threads can be cut after printing. The rest of the
part can be directly printed with no issues.

What are the dimensions of the part? It will need modelling in a 3d cad
package and saved in a .stl format. I use solidworks but any 3d cad package
will do…Google Sketchup or if you are into linux Maya or blender are ok.
A lot of our members use openscad…pick the software you know and draw the
part and then come and see us and we can organise printing etc.

Wednesday nights from 7 is open night.

If you have any more questions email me back.

Cheers

Thanks,

I’ve not got it to hand but I’ll measure it and post sized later. Never
tried my hand at CAD but have a long public transport journey on friday so
will arm myself with software and some measurements and see what I can do!On Monday, 10 March 2014 15:36:11 UTC, Alexander Lang wrote:
