3D scanners

Hi all

I’m new here (you probably noticed). I asked a couple of friends about this
and one of them (Will, creator of Skynet’s ping pong ball collector)
pointed me in this direction.

A mate of mine works in label design/printing. Part of his work involves
modelling shrink-wrap labels, but getting 3D models of eg drinks bottles is
expensive through commercial outfits. Does anyone here have or know someone
who has a 3D scanner? I think he’s ideally looking for someone independent
who’d like to take on odd jobs like this. I’m pretty ignorant of the 3D
scanner scene (as in I learnt about 3D printers first), so I don’t know
what the hardware is like ATM, but I promised to ask around.

Gimme a shout if anyone can help. The guy – like me – is from Stoke, so
basically it’s a charity case.

Cheers
Ash

Hello Ash,
I live in Leicester where we have no ‘Space’ and I joined Nottingham
about six months ago.
However, travel is a bitch and I havnt been there for ages!
The good news is that Leicester now does have a Space; it opened today and
opens to the public March 1st
I heartily recommend you seek the Google-Group ‘Leicester Hackspace’.
Recently I have been looking at Manchester’s Google page because I wanted
to get some cheap Minimus(es)
and I heard they got a truck-load on the cheap. Don’t know if I was
misinformed. Anyway, that’s how I saw your post.

Now, back to 3D scanners. The reason I stuck my oar in here is that two of
the ‘founder members’ ( doesn’t that sound grand! )
of Leicester Hackspace ( me and Clive Jones ) are making a prototype 3D
scanner. More for a laugh than anything else.
It is still at the stage where, as we like to say, questions are being
asked. If theres a real use for it I might be able to push it
along, especially now we have somewhere to work. But bear in mind this is
Mickey-Mouse territory and your friend may not
like the results. Depends what he wants, really. He may need a proper 3D
scanner and/or someone closer to Manchester or
Stoke may have a better offer. But at least you know about us.

Hi Bruce and Ash…just thought I would chime in too. We are also in the
process of developing a 3D scanner. We have an enclosure and most of the
hardware assembled but more work is required to finish off. It got put on
the backburner in lieu of more pressing projects…funny how that always
happens.

If we get something useable up and running we will let you know.

We did get a truckload of minimuses however it was a group order with leeds
and london Hackspace and they were so cheap as we got a great price break
for ordering more than a hundred units! I haven’t convinced people to
order more although here is a new device which is on paper that is better
and just as cheap!

Hello Alex,
I don’t know what your scanner looks like, But I’ll hazard a guess it’s
better than ours, so Ash would probably do better to go to you.
My offer was conditional on users be pretty desperate. Also, you’re a lot
closer.
Ash, you could always get your pal to send me a bottle and I’ll return it
with a 3D print. Then you can see whose scanner is better.
If mine loses I’ll take a hammer to the winner. We cant all be good losers,
you know…

Alex, I wondered about that Minimus. Seems like it’s obsolete. I already
bought some el cheapo Chinese boards which are essentially
a smd '328 and a row of pin-holes. Theres no USB connector, no FTDI chip,
nothing . Bares bones with attitude. But they’re absolutely
tiny and I’m going to try and make a flashing T-shirt from it.
Of course the 32U4 board has better facilities, but I cant remember what.
Is it more pins? and a USB UART?
I already have more boards and chips than I can ever possibly use, so I got
a 32U4 as well. No, me neither.
Stay Lucky guys

I’m not sure if we are still planning to get them, we’ve just purchased a
couple of atmega32u4 boards from ebay to see if they are as good.On 31 January 2014 17:16, Bruce Clothier clothier.bruce@gmail.com wrote:

Hi Alex, Bruce

Thanks for the replies, guys! (Thanks to Will for pointing out there was
activity here, somehow I managed to fail to turn on email notifications.)

Alex, yes, please let me know how you get on with this.

Bruce, thanks for the offer, do you mind if I pass on an email or something
for him to get in touch? Sounds like it may not be up to the required
precision but it’s probably worth a conversation.

Cheers

Ben,
If you get a chance to play with them, please share your experience: by the
time I get
around to doing anything I suspect the Sun will have cooled to room
temperature.
