I thought I’d announce, for the benefit of hackspacers old and new, the AdventOfCode event. For a few years now, there has been a coding challenge called AdventOfCode at https://adventofcode.com/ where each day from 1st to 25th December, a pair of linked challenges are released which seem to take between 30 and 120 minutes total to achieve each day.
It’s now a month until the 1st December, and so I’d like to encourage people to sign up to AoC, have a look at previous years challenges to get a feel for things, limber up, and prepare, and then to use AoC as a way to have a bit of friendly competition among ourselves and also as a chance to learn a new language such as Haskell, Rust, or Go.
I have a “private leaderboard” set up, which will usually contain Hackspace members and also a few Codethink people. The leaderboard code is 69076-d4b54074 and you can join it at https://adventofcode.com/2018/leaderboard/private
I look forward to seeing you on telegram (we have an AoC group and we can invite you to it) if you want somewhere to potentially discuss things, though please avoid spoilers on the day itself at least.
If anyone wants to discuss it with me in person or on telegram, for example if you’re unsure if you feel up to it, I’d be very happy to do so over the coming month. If anyone tries any of the last few years of problems and wants to compare them to my previous efforts, again, feel free to find me online.
See you on the leaderboard.
