Hi HacMAN!
Not sure if you are aware of this, but BuildBrighton are organising a ‘Mini Maker Faire’ - basically a community-made version of the full-blown O’Reilly Maker Faires. It’ll be held on the 3rd September, in the Brighton Dome.
Jonty from LHS mentioned that you guys made some awesome stuff for the Newcastle one, and I was wondering if any of you would like to participate in this too.
We’ve got around 25 stands to fill for the event, and we want to get as wide
a spectrum of Maker Faire fun into the space as possible. The way that we’re
approaching this is to ask anyone that’s interested in having a stand to
fill in an application via our site:
http://www.makerfairebrighton.com/makers
We’re very much open to makers selling wares on their stands, particularly
if it adds value to the event. We have a preference for stands that are
engaging and ideally interactive, but we’re not fussy
Jonty and I have been discussing creating a combined
Soldering-Is-Easy workshop and Hackspace Open Hack table, so even if you
don’t want to have a dedicated stand for yourself, it’d be great if you came
along and joined in with that.
At the moment it’s too early days with sponsorship to say whether we can pay
any expenses unfortunately, but we do have our basic outgoings covered so
please let us know if it’s an issue and we’ll see what can be done.
Thanks, and hope to hear your amazing ideas soon!
Mike
Hi Mike,
Hows the drainage at your venue?

Hi Mike,
Hows the drainage at your venue?
-Bob
Would this be for a water-theremin by any chance?!
I’ll need to ask the venue, there’s certainly no drainage on the main floor, but there are bars on in the main space and on the mezzanine above. There’s also loo’s directly below the mezzanine.
What kind of arrangement would you need?
It just might be!
The H2audiO sprays water everywhere while being used, and is pretty loud.
we set up a 2m radius splash zone last event, and were constantly mopping
(though i think we only used 3 buckets of water all day. We’d need
somewhere we wont damage the floor by getting it wet, and where people wont
be driven mad by the constant droning background noise. Putting it outside
would probably be a good option.
Of course, we’d probably want to bring all the other kit (project a sketch,
twitterdrummer, waterchimes etc), so a nice dry, quiet indoor space would be
preferable for that!

Woop! They all sound brilliant!
For transportation to this, how does everyone want to play it?
I’ve been looking at van hire, and we can hire a 6 seater crewcab van for
about £140 (friday - sunday). Diesel would be about £80-£100 (going by
Newcastle where it was £70). We’d leave on Friday morning and come back
Sunday night.
We could split the cost between those travelling in the van (i cant afford
to pay the whole thing again!), its probably more efficient than all getting
planes, trains, coaches and unicycles down there. (Also stops some people
sneaking off early to avoid packing up
)
-Bob
I did not sneak off early to avoid packing up, that was the last
reasonable coach back. I am prepared to contribute to the costs of
travel providing I get a seat! I was prepared to contribute last time
its just there was a lack of preparation and planning! If we didn’t
leave things until that last possible moment we would be better off!
Things to do:
Find out how many of us need to go, at the very least a minimum number
so that we have an idea.
Based upon the above number calculate travel and fuel costs and
equally divide it between all of those going.
Finally get the money up front from people going!! Then book rooms,
vans and make awesome plans!!
If the costs are reasonable I am definitely up for going down! I
always like a good weekend away…
Regards
