Hi Peeps,
Seeking a car battery for the Manchester Model Expo, does anyone have
one that’s in good order that they could lend to the space from
Saturday 23rd through to Sunday 4th of March? The extra time allows
us to hook up and test on the Saturday 23rd, weekend before the
exhibition.
If the answer is no, then I guess the next question is would anyone
chuck £5 in to the pot for us to buy one? We’re hoping to drive the
3d printer from it for the duration of the weekend so I guess we’ll
need to spend about £30 or so?
Thoughts?
Thanks, Ian.

I’ll chuck in a fiver as I don’t have a battery.

I have an old battery that came from a speedboat (dont ask) in my shed. I
can bring it in tomorrow so we can test if it actually works if someone can
bring a charger.On 19 February 2013 11:30, Ian Norton i.d.norton@gmail.com wrote:

I don’t really recommend buying a car battery, they are designed for
very brief high-current loads, not a sustained draw. What you want is a
Leisure Battery, which are designed for the job.

A leisure battery is definitely what you need.
I shall have an ask around and see if anyone’s got one you can borrow/have.
(Sometimes happens because you can’t replace a single battery from a
domestic bank.) It might have to be picked up from Macclesfield though
(it’s not the kind of thing I’m prepared to move by bike and they tend not
to like you taking them on the train).
Shall let you know.

Bob: Do you know whether the speed boat battery in question was the starter
or the domestic?
Ian: have you thought about how to charge said battery over the weekend?
Without knowing the power requirements of the 3d printer I can’t say for
sure that it won’t last the weekend but it may not. Why use a battery? Why
not a generator?

Without knowing the power requirements of the 3d printer I can’t say for

not a generator?
We’ve worked out that if we don’t use the heated bed, if we run the 3d
printer directly from the battery it’ll take about 5 amps.
I think the plan is it’ll last for one day, then we’ll charge it in the
space or at someone’s house overnight.
Cant use a generator as its an indoor event, and there are lots of limits
about where you can and cant run extension leads.
Why not just take the massive high current psu?On 19 Feb 2013 13:03, “Bob Clough” parag0n@ivixor.net wrote:

Ian: have you thought about how to charge said battery over the
weekend? Without knowing the power requirements of the 3d printer I can’t
say for sure that it won’t last the weekend but it may not. Why use a
battery? Why not a generator?
We’ve worked out that if we don’t use the heated bed, if we run the
3d printer directly from the battery it’ll take about 5 amps.
I think the plan is it’ll last for one day, then we’ll charge it in
the space or at someone’s house overnight.
Cant use a generator as its an indoor event, and there are lots of
limits about where you can and cant run extension leads.
