Components for the electronics bench

Hello Hacman people, esteemed members of good and poor standing!

I canvassed those at the space last night for ideas on which passive and
active components we should stock in the space for general use. I am
currently sorting these components and ensuring we have stock of everything
people think we may need. If there are specific components that members
think we should keep a stock of at the hackspace please can they add it to
the list with a note as to why…there may be an alternative that we
already have!

Passive Components

Resistors - through hole - I have just bought another 2500
so we have the full E24 series of values - I’ll be sorting them later if
anyone wants to help…
- surface mount (0805 package) - Need sorting but we
have shedloads

Capacitors - through hole - ceramic and electrolytic - We have loads of
most values - also requiring some sorting - mostly done though

Inductors - we have most values of through hole inductors but if we need
more it can be arranged. We don’t have any surface mount inductors…I
don’t really think we need surface mount inductors unless people intend
making switch-mode power supplies or analogue signal filters…

Electromechanical

Transformers - we have plenty of power transformers although I actually
want to reduce the number we have as they are heavy and take up too much
room! As far as I know we don’t have any audio matching transformers or
isolation transformers.

Switches, Pots and header pins - we have shedloads of these at the moment.
If the supply starts to run low I will get more. Most of the pots are
panel mount - if people would like PCB mount let me know…

Relays - We have a stock of certain relays but I’m not sure how many are 5
volt friendly - I will look into it. If people need relays let me know

Semiconductors

Diodes - through hole - we have a fair number of signal and power
diodes…they are mostly unsorted though and difficult to classify unless
labelled. We don’t have any surface mount diodes…

LEDS - we have plenty of 5mm through hole LEDS but no surface mount ones at
the moment. I am intending to buy a selection of coloured 0805 LEDS. -
Any particular hues required?

Transistors - we have plenty of BC548 and 2N3904 general purpose NPN
transistors and some general purpose PNP transistors - BC337 and BC558. I
may get some more of those.

I would like to get a supply of logic level FETS such as the 2N7000 or the
FDP7030BL - arduino friendly N channel Mosfets - if anyone has any other
FETS they think we should stock please let me know.

Op-Amps - we don’t currently store any operational amplifiers - I intend to
start…I have a fair number of 741 devices in my box that I’m donating to
the space but these are a bit old hat and out of date now. Ben mentioned
LM358 devices which are general purpose and cheap. If anyone has another
device in mind let me know. I will also be getting a small quantity of
LM324 power audio amps because they are quite popular.

Comparators - We currently don’t have any analogue comparators - I vote we
get some LM311 and LM339 comparators and see where we go. It is possible
to make a comparator using an OP-Amp but a comparator does work better
IMO…

TTL logic - 74 Series - We don’t have much in the way of TTL logic. I
think we should have a stock of 74LS595 shift registers and possibly some
other general purpose logic. I use the 595 a lot for bits and pieces but I
accept other people may have their own device of choice - Let me know. We
don’t have any CMOS level devices - I don’t use them at all these
days…times change!

Linear and Switch-mode regulators - We have a good supply of fixed and
adjustable linear regulators such as the 78XX series and the LM317 series
regulators. Does anyone have a goto switching regulator that they use and
think we should stock. I tend not to need switch-mode regulators as I buy
an off the shelf module usually. Ideas, comments?

ADC and DACS - We don’t have any analogue to digital converters or digital
to analogue converters. I normally use the analogue inputs of the
microcontroller I’m using unless I need more resolution and
sensitivity…I tend to use analogue devices AD7915 when required (SPI
controlled) but there are I2C devices which might be better - Ideas,
comments?

Microcontrollers - We don’t store microcontrollers but I think it would be
an idea to stock some Atmel 328p devices which can be pre-flashed with an
arduino bootloader as required…I tend to not favour Microchip PIC
devices these days but if people would like a specific device please let me
know…

I think that’s about it for now…I could keep thinking of components we
might need forever!

Cheers

Alex

Sounds like a good list. The only thing I can think of to add is wired PP3
battery connectors.On 6 June 2013 14:14, Alexander Lang alexanderlang1980@gmail.com wrote:

We have got some of those somewhere. They have been MIA since the move. I
will try harder to find them…along with the dot punch and other
things…

I’d suggest:

VRegs
7805 - I think we have a stock of these in, at least I remember buying 100
of them a couple of years back!
LM317 - Adjustable VRegs are always handy
LM1117-33 - 3.3v 800mA SOT-223 SMT vreg
Maybe these DC-DC modules - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190834063670 , super
cheap, i’ve used one in alfred and it works great.

FETs
I’m a big fan of
http://uk.farnell.com/on-semiconductor/ntf3055l108t1g/mosfet-n-60v-sot-223/dp/1431323RL
,
they’re used in the original frank pods and on the alfred boards. pretty
big SMD and will switch 3A from a 3v3 pin

We still have loads of 7805 regulators and a smattering of the other 78
series - 7809 and 7812 etc. We have some LM317 and LM338 adjustables but I
will get some more. I’ll add your LM1117-33 regulator to the list and have
a look at your module…it’s probably the same or similar to the one I use.

I’ll add your FETS to the list…I don’t intend getting these all at once
mind…I’ll buy some bits each month until the list is cleared…

Cheers for your input Bob…

Wot?! No 555 timers?!

And perhaps some instrumentation amps maybe? Not sure on that one.

hmm…instrumentation amps are a bit specific IMO…they can be made from
3x OP-Amps if people know what they are about…I’ll consider it. We have
a fair few 555s I think…missed them off the list - I sincerely apologise
for this most inconsiderate oversight!

Hi,
Yes, I haven’t been in the space for almost a year, just had too much
stuff. Hopefully coming in next week or the week after (and on that note,
have you moved?)

Just suggesting H-Bridge Motor Drivers (SN754410 ??) and audio stuffs.

555s without 4017 ?? :stuck_out_tongue:

a fair few 555s I think…missed them off the list - I sincerely apologise
for this most inconsiderate oversight!

Wot?! No 555 timers?!

And perhaps some instrumentation amps maybe? Not sure on that one.

We have moved, but not far, 42 Edge Street 2nd Floor (directly above the
old space, but access through a different door)

I would like to get a supply of logic level FETS such as the 2N7000 or the
FDP7030BL - arduino friendly N channel Mosfets - if anyone has any other
FETS they think we should stock please let me know.

RFP30N06LE are pretty good - 60V, 30A, logic-level N-channel

Maybe these DC-DC modules - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190834063670 , super
cheap, i’ve used one in alfred and it works great.

Ben gave me a DC-DC module he got off of ebay and it was unusably bad. I
suspect it was a ‘recycled’ one, I assume new ones will be more
reliable. I can’t remember exactly what it was though - any idea Ben?

The RFP3060 devices are not in stock in Farnell which is why I went with
the 3070 which is an equivalent device…On 6 Jun 2013 18:00, “Alan Burlison” alan.burlison@gmail.com wrote:
