Does anybody know (or know anybody that knows) anything about WIND-UP/PULL-STRING mechanisms?

I’m in desperate need of knowledge on wind-up toys/mechanisms.

Material appears to be pretty scarce on this.

I imagine it’s a tad niche, but if anybody could help me in even the
slightest, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Ritchie (SlideshowBlob)

What exactly are you looking for? How to make these toys / mechanisms or
how to repair them?

Cheers

I have seen more of that type of stuff on hackaday.

Take a look at the assorted patents on wind-up/pull string mechanisms.
There’s a few thousand to choose from I think, the first one was way back
in the 1840’s.On 14 Aug 2014 19:59, “Slideshow_Blob” craigfromyolo@gmail.com wrote:

I imagine it’s a tad niche, but if anybody could help me in even the slightest,

I’ve sometimes wondered whether it would be possible to make a wind-up computer or a wind-up phone. Years ago there was the OLPC with a hand crank, but that might only have been a concept diagram. Probably a wind-up mobile phone would be more feasible.

You can get wind-up phone chargers. A bit more generic than a single phone,
and avoids adding a big crank to a small phone, but integrating it might be
OK for a robust disaster-type phone, like a boat emergency radio. On Fri, Aug 15, 2014 at 9:19 AM, Bob Mottram bob@robotics.uk.to wrote:

Hi Alex.

I’m looking to make giant wind-up toys.

In the kind of things I’m imagining, the motion would be mechanical, but
I’ve realised recently, that I could have the mechanism generate a small
amount of power for additional touches such as LEDs that just fade out with
the current (no need for batteries).

Thanks,

Hi Droid21,

This is absolute gold!

…despite the Patent Office having such a messy illustration style.

I hadn’t thought to look here.

Hi Mark,

No. Nothing to do with a phone.

I’m trying to make giant mechanical wind-up toys.

The only electronics being small, simple additions such as LEDs.

The Adafruit Fona looks pretty cool though.

Thanks,
