Electronic Mats

Hi people (it’s been a while),

Me and my friend were talking about doing electronics at home and we have
both been looking for the same thing.

Is there some kind of mat that you use for soldering and the like?
Something you can put on any surface for a bit of electronic hacking?

I know there are anti static mats but they seem a bit pricey for what they
are. So the question is really what do you use at home and do you even use
mats when you do home electronics stuff?

I just use my (wooden) table. As long as you’re OK with the burn marks
it should suffice. I don’t use any sort of anti-static mat or wrist
attachment thing and I don’t think I’ve ever lost a component to
static. At the space we have some cork tiles to guard against burning
that we use when Alex is looking.

I put an old newspaper down, open at the middle pages, and am just very careful.Date: Sat, 10 May 2014 07:34:14 -0700

Any rubber matt or old chopping board would do for soldering. Preferably
choose something that is unlikely to catch fire easily…

Please be careful. My missus is never pleased when I reach for the
soldering iron at home! It isn’t as bad as when I was caught etching pcbs
in the kitchen sink but…

Haha! Alex that’s marvellous.

We just use the wooden counter top in the shop or the table at home (but
I’m not that precious about burn marks).
