Electronics + Radio Course

Hi all,

As I mentioned last night at the Stockport Hackspace meeting, I’ve spoken to
Stockport Radio Society about their Foundation Amateur Radio License - which
includes a small degree of Electronics training, and I’d like to talk to
them about setting up a course for us.

So, the course is £40 for a two-day, 12 hour training course, at the end of
which is a 45 minute, 25 question exam on the content you’ve covered on the
course. You leave the event with enough paperwork to apply for your license
from OFCOM, which is free for life, but, if you require a paper copy of your
license, costs £20 to supply it to you. The foundation license lets you
operate Amateur Radio equipment on certain frequencies with 10W power.

Here’s a link to the syllabus for the course:

You need to buy the course notes from the Radio Society of Great Britain at
http://www.rsgbshop.org/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Training_19.html#a89 which
costs £4.99, with £1.95 P&P, although I’ve checked and we can get a discount
on the P&P for more than two books.

Since I’m in the process of trying to teach myself the rudiments of
electronics at the moment (With a view to building my own embedded
systems in the far, far future), is this course a suitable grounding
in the basics of circuit design - i.e., capacitor / transistor
networks, amplification circuits, etc?

Have to confess that radio itself isn’t an area of massive interest
for me, but if the course includes the above then I’ll sign up without
a second thought…
