Email Currently Isn't Working

Hi everyone!

We’re currently having some issues with emails going out/in due to the sheer load that was applied originally. This is only an issue as all 300-odd users were originally set to “Mailing list” mode so we could send out the first “Migration Complete” email, but this obviously backfired as every post and test-post following this was then emailed out to 300+ people. We’re working to import the mail preferences from the Google Group also, but until such a time as we have this organised emails will be disabled.

For reference, only about 50 people on the google group actually had it set to mailing list mode, 25 were receiving a sumary, and all the rest were receiving nothing. So once we have the settings imported we shouldn’t have an issue with this overloading.

And before it is said yes we realise this means Discourse isn’t currently working as a mailing list, and no it isn’t a valid reason to revert back to the google group.

Thank you for your patience, we’re working to get this sorted as soon as possible.

After 7 days of it being broken yes it is a reason to revert to GG. The only reason I knew there was a problem at all is because the discourse mailing list summary setting, which I’d set to off, is also being ignored and I got an unwanted summary email.

Can we turn this shiny pile of crap off please and go back to something that works?

We’ve made some changes and the email should be working now.

Your choice to not receive summaries was ignored as it was disabled so we could restore some form of email to the group, but that shouldn’t be an issue now as mailing list mode is restored.

I can confirm I have been receiving emails. Thanks @Quidoigo I know this has been more difficult than we hoped to set up. It’s good to be in full control of our mailing list.

If you cease getting emails but you are configured to get them; please also poke @Kinnison on Telegram because it’s possible I screwwed something up

I don’t want emails but have started getting them again. Who can I poke
about that? (Whatever poking is…)

I do want emails and I’m still not receiving them. We were repeatedly assured that discourse would provide the same service as the gmail list, it clearly doesn’t. We were assured that you wouldn’t be forced to use the (vile) web interface, that was clearly wrong as well.

It still isn’t working, I’ve just checked the web interface and there
are new messages that I haven’t got via email.

Plus it’s still putting the “+” crap in the Reply-To field.

Discourse may be fine for people who only want to make occasional visits
and are happy with a glossy-looking but unfriendly web interface. For
anyone else it’s hopeless and has made it impossible for me to continue
following the hacman discussions. Even though I’m a lurker these days I
do read the emails and rely on them to keep me up to date.

These issues were all brought up before Discourse was rolled out and
were brushed off with assurances that turn out to have been false.

As with changes made when tired, I had typod slightly. For those expecting messages who missed them, I apologise. For those getting messages who weren’t expecting them, you can disable them relatively easily; but I think @thinkl33t will be doing so soon across the board.

Regarding the reply-to and other stuff; I know that it is frustrating certain people; but with a competent email setup it isn’t hard to track with discourse, and it makes life significantly easier than GG did. GG while “easy” for some, was entirely impossible for many.

How so? There’s a web interface and an email interface that actually
works, unlike Discourse.

What actual problems was the migration to Discourse intended to
address? I haven’t seen any concrete reasons given.

I’m going to be scripting the import of people’s settings from google group this evening regarding mail delivery / digest / no email this evening. The groups importer unfortunately didn’t import that, and set everyone to mailing list mode by default.

Hopefully this will fix the fact everyone who has ever emailed our mailing list is now getting complainy emails about this (sorry! It’ll stop tonight, I promise!)

For those who want to use the group as a pure mailing list, i’ve found the following settings mail it equivalent to google groups for me:

If possible please leave mine alone, I’ve already reset it about 3 times
now and it should be correct, although delivery of email seems
intermittent and partial, at best.

I have those already, plus the ‘send me email when active’ one. Not
convinced it is working properly though…

That was my fault, I typo’d in the rate limit config. Fortunately I fixed that this morning and so far 2800ish emails have been passed on  I know change is uncomfortable and I am sorry that after I thought we’d fixed delivery last night, I still managed to snafu it, but it really should be reliable for delivery now.

This one at least seems to have got through via email, I’ll check the
web UI once there’s been some more traffic and make sure that nothing
has been dropped.

I’m now getting duplicates of any messages I send to the list, one
addressed to the mailing list and one directly to me, sigh. It may be
transient, if this one gets doubled up I’ll send a followup.

I’m getting duplicates too but to different email addresses. I suspect some of the “fixing” restored the email address I used prior to changing it. I can fix that myself easily enough, just airing it in case you have the same issue.

AFAIR I’ve only ever had one, and my last email didn’t get dup’d so I’ll
put it down as a transient effect of the cleanup works that’s been going on.

I’ve just had this and figured it out - a reply to a user (like this one) will send you duplicates if you have Mailing List Mode and Send me an email when someone quotes me, replies to my post, mentions my @username, or invites me to a topic turned on.

If you turn off the latter it shouldn’t happen.

Thanks, turned off. I haven’t had any for a couple of days but I’m
assuming that is because the circumstances you describe haven’t happened
for me.
