Factory Youth Zone

Hi All,

I’ve had a request from Michelle (heated bluetooth gloves) to ask if anyone
at the hackspace would be interested in volunteering for this:

Factory Youth Zone Event

My friend Sophie is a mentor at the Factory Youth Zone. It is a youth club
for the young people aged 8-21 in Harpurhey, one of the most deprived areas
in the UK, and they’re trying to get the young children (8-12) more aware
of digital marketing and computer activities over the coming months.

They will begin with a regular Code Club there on the 10th November and
Samsung have kindly donated equipment to allow these to be run. It’s the
first time Factory Youth Zone has really ventured into digital making so
it’s pretty exciting to be giving the young people this chance.

To launch this new avenue to the members they want to show the kids some
really cool digital initiatives from local companies. For many young people
it will be the first time they have seen things like this and the fact it’s
from people locally makes it seem more achievable. On the 6th November,
4pm-6pm, they’ll be holding a launch event where people can display their
initiatives to the curious young people, it’s all really informal and
hopefully both noisy and fun.

It doesn’t have to be from companies, just something to show the kids so
they can be inspired to create their own things.

If you’re interested, please let me know and I’ll forward you Sophie’s
details.

Please forward to anyone you know who might be interested. Chris, are you
able to please ask your Hackspace/Hackman members? Thank you.

Unfortunately, I’ll be working that day, but maybe if some of you have time
to show off some hacks/inventions you could get in touch with Michelle.

Chris,

I drive past Factory zone nearly every day…it’s only a five minute drive
from home but I’m never back from work normally before 6 so the chances of
me being able to make that are incredibly slim.

Good luck though
