I’m new to Hacman, so firstly hello!
Secondly, I’m looking to furnish myself with a small toolkit for bike
repairs and some minor work around the house. I don’t need professional
quality stuff, but I’d like to buy tools that will at least do the job
safely (without damaging the things I’m working on or me) and won’t need
replacing for a few years at least given light use.
Alex kindly suggested I might post to this list to ask for brand and kit
recommendations, so this is that post.
Budget: £30-60
Basic tools sought:
Claw hammer
Spammer set/good adjustable spanner
Allen keys
Screwdriver set (incl. precision bits)
Long nose pliers
Combination pliers
Mole grips
Pry/Crow bar
Utility knife
Torpedo level
Tape measure
Birdcage maker’s awl
I’m also looking for recommendations for these things, but I don’t know
what my budget should be yet.
Power tools:
Drill
Decorating stuff:
Brushes
Roller
Scraper
Wallpaper brush
Current plan of action is to visit the Smithfield car boot sale on Sunday
and see what kind of prices I can find while also keeping an eye on the
Lidl sales, but I’d very much appreciate recommendations of manufacturers,
brands, ebay sellers, etc.
Thanks,
Colin
Hi, I’m not too sure what to recommend for the basic set you want, as my
extensive kit was in the £££’s (I’m an auto electrician). But for power
tools I personally use Makita or Milwaukee. Pricey but extremely hard
wearing, very well built and will last a lifetime if maintained. Also
there’s an extensive range of replacement parts available for both. For
light duty home type stuff that’s a bit cheaper Ryobi is not bad, they
don’t withstand heavy use though. In terms of places to buy, I either buy
brand new (rarely) or buy used from a car boot sale or local auction or
eBay and then repair them.

I can certainly recommend DeWalt if Makita or Milwaukee are too dear.
Bosch are quite good too. Avoid unbranded power tools if possible as they
will fail a lot sooner.
Also, be careful when buying measuring gear. I’ve found steel rules to be
the worst as the cheap ones have printed graduations that do not align with
the rule edge!
In general, I would avoid any tools that come from discount stores, with
the exception of Lidl and Aldi. Their stuff is pretty good.
