How it all begins

Hello good people of the British Isles

I have decided I want to establish a hacker/maker/whatever-space in my
local area, which is a small post-textile town called Galashiels about an
hour south of Edinburgh. This is a long term ideal and I’m not in any
particular rush, but in the long term I need somewhere where I can
experiment with handloom adjustments and develop ancillary handweaving
technology because I won’t be in college forever.

The reason I’m emailing you lot should be reasonably obvious. I’ve
subscribed to every hackspace email list I could find in the British
mainland in order to ask you:

How did you begin?

Where are you today?

What is your focus/what are you doing?

What problems have you overcome and how did you do so?

How long have you been going?

What are your plans for the future?

I’d love to hear from you, I want to gather as much experience together as
I can so we don’t go reinventing the wheel with all it’s pitfalls here. The
reason I’m asking UK hackers specifically is that we operate in roughly the
same legal framework (there’s a slight difference between scotland and
england, but not much i expect) and economic climate. I’m also interested
in building up contacts with people for the future and discovering what, if
any, coordination exists at a national level.

I look forward to hearing from you

Andrew

PS If there’s any groups I’ve missed out please let me know. I like to be
complete and I’m sure I’m not.

Hi Andrew,

Whilst I can’t comment much on your questions, I’m sure that I’m not alone
in being curious as to the answers you might get.

Any chance you could do a consolidation post to all the lists summarising
the answers you get please?

I think you missed Nottingham.

Thanks, Ian.On 8 May 2012 20:48, “Andrew Kieran” apk5hw@gmail.com wrote:
