Localgiving.com (was: Hackspace Manchester Membership)

Hi,

The home education group I belong to has just started using Localgiving.com
to take fees, event payments etc. We’re not a registered charity, but we
are approved as a community group. As a result we get 20% tax back on most
of our members’ transactions. Might be worth the Hackspace applying? I
could find out more information on how to apply if you are interested.

Hey All,

We’re still waiting on the bank details, but in the meantime are going to
start collecting the other information we need to get people signed up as
Hackspace members.

Membership costs £25 per month, or a board member can approve a £10 per
month ‘Starving Hacker Rate’ if you genuinely can’t afford it.

Joining Hackspace Manchester gets you anytime access to the space (*see
below), a vote in board member elections, and project storage within the
space. To become a member, please fill in the membership form at
http://goo.gl/cNkkP, and we’ll contact you directly using those details
once the bank stuff is sorted.

*Currently access is available whenever there is a keyholder about, but
will be easier once the RFID system is set up, and as more keyholders are
created.

Ta,
Bob

Dave.

I’ve emailed the person who set ours up to ask what they needed. I’ll let
you know what details they come back with.

Hi,

So I’ve got a bit more information. As ever, there is no such thing as a
free lunch  I’ve also got a contact name to talk to next. I’d be happy
to phone them myself to sound them out, or equally pass it on to someone
else who has more info about the Hackspace plans.

Here’s what I’ve found:

(1) In order to register we’d need to be vetted to be a community group.
What exactly counts as a community group is not obvious…sigh
(2) The people that do the vetting in Manchester are the charity “Forever
Manchester”
(3) The home education group had dealt with Forever Manchester already so
the vetting was easy. Don’t know what it is like starting from scratch
(4) It is not free. The costs are:
(4a) £60 + VAT annual subscription – currently there is a 3-month free
trial offer on
(4b) Each donation is subject to payment handler fees – currently
Paypal @ 1.4% + 20p
(4c) Each donation is subject then to 3% Localgiving fee. This is
charged whether or not the donor reclaims gift aid, so it is important to
only put gift aid transactions through this route!

Let me know what you think. If it is too much hassle probably best to let
it drop. If it might well be helpful I’m happy to make a call on your
behalf and sound them out and/or give you the contact details (obviously
don’t want to post the contact details in the public list).

All the best,
