Massive MIDI Monome for the Manchester Mini Makerfaire

MakerFaire Project!

On Saturday Jim, Charlotte and I were talking about how much cool MIDI
stuff people have made in the space, and lamenting about how it is all so
normal-human-sized.

The idea of making a massive Monome came up. Of course, as this is the
best idea EVER, we have to do it.

We have a month. Easy.

I have put together a basic plan for scale. The person is a child or small
human, the thing itself will be about 1m x 1m!

Sound awesome. Count me in.On 11 July 2013 11:50, Bob Clough parag0n@ivixor.net wrote:

Does sound awesome…I must confess I had no idea what a Monome was!

I am interested in helping but the device’s strength comes from the midi
device its connected to. I don’t think the keyboard we have in the space is
all that good. I think its only 12 key polyphonic - Only able to make
twelve notes sound at once so we might want a better midi output device.

Other than that I’m all for it.

The way a monome works, I think its only 8 note polyphonic maximum anyway. On 11 July 2013 12:27, Alexander Lang alexanderlang1980@gmail.com wrote:

I’m thinking a MAX7221 LED driver, a couple of 4051s, an ATMega328p to
control the lights/get the inputs for the Monome’s brain. I don’t think
programming shouldn’t be very difficult at all.

I’m happy to set up a MOS8580 SID board for the synthesis part, wot with me
already working on that sort of thing… for that authentic retro 8 bit
feel, too. I have quite a few SID chips so we could easily use 3 of them,
which would give us 9 voices total. Set it up with a version of the
pentatonic scale, set up different rows with different waveforms, octaves
etc.

If someone wants to go mad making some other kind of synth though, I’ll
happy excuse myself.

Probably not going to be much use with the physical monome itself though!

On the design of the physical monome itself, here is my current CAD plans!

Left is the front sheet, looking at it from the back.
Right is the back sheet, looking at it from the front.
(basically imagine it folded down the middle)

Beige is the MDF board
Pink is 5mm bolt holes to hold it together
Red is carved out to 13mm deep on 18mm thick MDF. It is what holds the
fronts of the buttons in place.
Yellow is cut around the inside, to provide the holes for buttons.
Cyan is cut to 8mm deep, to provide cable runs
Green is a cutout for electronics, will be covered on the back with an
acrylic sheet or something

I love the idea of using a SID based synth to play the music, deliciously
retro

Maybe we could use the 9th voice to provide a metronome style ticking as it
moves on to the next squareOn 11 July 2013 12:41, Charlotte Gore conspiracygore@gmail.com wrote:

Theres still the hard slog of wiring the damn thing to do, which has to be
done after painting it, thats why we’ve had to start this stuff now.

I’m planning on CNCing the body of it next Friday, so I need the bits that
need to be measured in my hands by then!On 11 July 2013 15:42, Alexander Lang alexanderlang1980@gmail.com wrote:

I have a usb midi adaptor, so any pc

I’m not clear exactly what a monome is - is it an input or an output device?

Either way, you can just use a Minimus and LUFA to make a USB MIDI
device. That’s how my MIDILEd stuff works - the Minimus enumerates as a
MIDI output device, you plug it into a mmachine, send it any old MIDI
track and blinkenlights result.

Alan Burlison

I think the monome is more of an 8 beat, 8 track sequencer, so used to
trigger other things.On 11 Jul 2013 17:53, “Alan Burlison” alan.burlison@gmail.com wrote:

OK, so it’s going to be a MIDI output device. You can do that with a
minimus as well.

Alan Burlison

Hi,
Yes, I have said it before, but I will be coming back in (had
another play to light, again…) hopefully this coming Wednesday. If you
want a hand with the wiring (or for that matter, anything else), then I
have two available (though if you saw the wiring for the ping pong
matrix…). If you want LEDs then I still have a mountain or two of RGB 5mm
ones (CC and CA). I also have a lot (600) of WS2801 LEDs on strands, but
these are for another project, so I would need them back afterwards.

Wiring this thing up is going to be truly evil. Made an 8x8 button matrix
and an 8x8 LED matrix today. Tomorrow I’ll add the rest of the circuit and
start coding. Fun times!
