Mini Maker Fayre and ideas for my wife :)

So, today I saw a few of you at the fayre. I know it’s not just a HacMan thing, but I wouldn’t have known about the maker fayres if it wasn’t for the Hackspaces and so thanks for being involved

Right, on to business. Today Jules, my wife, did her first soldering at the “learn to solder” stand, and would be quite interested in doing some more similar projects.

In particular she loves clocks, and said several times that she’d like to make a clock, and loved one of the clock which was on the “home made gadgets” stand (who should really work on his patter, he could have sold several of those clocks to Jules today!)

That clock design is frankly way, way off for us both right now (it’s the one where you light up the words “it”, “is”, “twenty”, “eight” etc), but it would be good to put some kind of clock together, and I wondered if the group has any simple ideas I can spec up and put into a kit for her to build?

Thanks,

Jon “The Nice Guy” Spriggs

Hey Jon,

We’re planning on doing a knock clock kit / workshop soon, would she be
interested in that?

She’s very interested in that idea

Any idea around dates, times and costs would be appreciated

I was also at Maker Faire with a word clock that I have been intending to
turn into a kit (on the DoES Liverpool stand opposite Hacman). It’s not
quite as many LED’s as the “home made gadgets” one at only 90 leds in a
9×10 array, but it uses charliplexing so it can address each led
individually and uses a nice wipe and reveal transition animation.

While the control is fairly straight forward, it makes a good, challenging,
soldering kit, including the leds, the shrimp (arduino compatible) and real
time clock module and building a large scale double sided circuit board to
make the led array.

It’s something that I prototyped a while ago, and has been running for
months in the DoES Liverpool office completely reliably. I’ve been meaning
to revise my original design to make it easier to construct so I can get
round to open sourcing it, but I’ve had other projects to complete in the
mean time. If you’d like to commission me to make you a kit you would get a
custom designed clock kit just for you with your names engraved in the
laser cut parts as a thank you for sponsoring the kit development.

I can do a kit of parts, ready to assemble for £85, to develop and deliver
to you in 3-4 weeks.

An image of the current prototype is attached.

Let me know if you would be interested.
