Does anyone know where the cheapest place to get stuff PAT tested is? My friend needs to get his electric piano tested so he can play at a friend’s wedding on Friday.

Just as an aside, all PAT testing companies seem to have terrible cheapo websites. This does not fill me with confidence! :SFrom: madstunts@hotmail.com

It’s pretty easy to get the labels…
To do PAT testing you merely have to be competent enough to put your
scrawl on the labels - the HSE website states “In many low-risk
environments, a sensible (competent) member of staff can undertake
visual inspections if they have enough knowledge and training”
Why do they want it? It tends to be the kind of thing that large
companies do to check boxes, not for weddings.
Tony
We have a PAT tester in the space but tbh Tony is correct. Check the cables
and rating plate for the piano is un damaged and has the correct info and
put a tested for electrical safety sticker on it and have done.
I can provide stickers if needed…

Also check that the fuse in the plug is the correct rating for the piano.
Other than that follow what’s already been said, put a sticker on it,
scribble a recent date and an unreadable signature, develop a suitably hazy
recollection of where it was done and you should be good.

Ha ha! Thanks guys. I was reading on Wikipedia, and it does all seem to be a bit hazy. As far as I can tell, it only tests the power cable - is this right?
Anyway, Alex, if you could get me a sticker I would be very grateful. I will definitely be making sure it’s safe to the best of my abilities anyway, just so there’s no possible comeback.

Paul
Just so you know PAT testing checks three things
The earth for the system is capable of carrying the fault current
That live neutral and earth are not connected together
That the fuse for the system is intact and does not blow immediately.
It does this by passing 25 Amps at 12 Vdc between live neutral and earth
using earth as the positive conductor. This is the earth bond test.
The next test is the insulation resistance test. 500 Vdc is passed between
live and neutral and any leakage current is measured. From this the
insulation resistance is calculated…it should be greater than 25 M ohms
Finally power is applied to the system at regular mains voltage and current
for a second. No issues should occur. Some posh testers perform a flash
test too where 3750 Vac is applied between live, neutral to earth and any
leakage is measured…there shouldn’t be any breakdown.
Hope this helps…
