It’s been discussed that a micro server for the space would be useful.
I have free delivery this month from buyer, and it’s currently £99.98 with
cash back.

It seems like stuff for the space like repairs to the equipment, light
fittings, water heaters, alfred stuff etc. should come out of the
membership money, is there a reason it’s not? Are we just short on
funds right now?

The rent and bill come from membership, it doesn’t stretch any further atm.
For the accounts, yes the money should come from the space, pledges can be
considered directed donations.

the case put forward more fully.
To the ignorant What is a microserver, what is its function and how much
will it cost and consume?
Could we not make our own server out of bits we already have? There are
spare towers available…
Cheers

The Microservers are small, low power (mine uses 23W at idle) servers with
4 hotswap disk trays. They’re pretty cheap (£200), and currently have a
£100 cashback offer available.
Kimball and I were discussing at the weekend getting one for the space, for
general file storage (datasheets, software, debian / ubuntu proxy), running
some of the stuff that’s currently sat on alfred, a camera proxy, a thin
client server and ldap server for spacenet.
We’ve disposed of most of the towers, but the ones we have use
significantly more power than a microserver would, and dont provide some of
the ‘nicities’ of proper server hardware. On 11 February 2014 14:18, Alexander Lang alexanderlang1980@gmail.comwrote:

Why do we need a microserver? Not saying no just it would be nice to have
the case put forward more fully.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m generally in favour of running your
own infrastructure wherever that’s possible and not relying upon Google,
etc. There are lots of advantages and of course you get some understanding
of how internet services work and how to install them, which can be a very
useful skill to have.

If we wanted to replace Google, we’d be better off doing it with a
virtual server, as having that hosted externally makes more sense for
a public-facing service like a mailing list. Also, we’d need someone
committed to running an external mailing list. It’s quite easy to find
someone willing to move to mailman and run it for a few months, but
I’d want someone to commit to running it for several years.
I’m not against the Microserver, but I don’t think this would be a
good use for it.
I’m currently keeping an eye on the
https://github.com/hyperkitty/hyperkitty hyprekitty
project for eventually moving the mailing list off google, but it would be
more likely to be hosted on the hacman VPS as the space’s internet
connection is sometimes a bit flakey.On 28 February 2014 14:39, Jim MacArthur jim@mode7.co.uk wrote:

Whilst I remember, I’ve got at least 2x of the 2GB ECC dimms that come with the N54L. Let me know if you guys want any, happy to post up for free.> On 28 Feb 2014, at 14:45, Bob Clough parag0n@ivixor.net wrote:
I’m currently keeping an eye on the https://github.com/hyperkitty/hyperkitty hyprekitty project for eventually moving the mailing list off google, but it would be more likely to be hosted on the hacman VPS as the space’s internet connection is sometimes a bit flakey.

Why do we need a microserver? Not saying no just it would be nice to have
the case put forward more fully.I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m generally in favour of running your
own infrastructure wherever that’s possible and not relying upon Google,
etc. There are lots of advantages and of course you get some understanding
of how internet services work and how to install them, which can be a very
useful skill to have.If we wanted to replace Google, we’d be better off doing it with a
virtual server, as having that hosted externally makes more sense for
a public-facing service like a mailing list. Also, we’d need someone
committed to running an external mailing list. It’s quite easy to find
someone willing to move to mailman and run it for a few months, but
I’d want someone to commit to running it for several years.I’m not against the Microserver, but I don’t think this would be a
good use for it.–

That’s targeted at Mailman 3, so you could be waiting for a bit. In the meantime you could survive on Mailman 2 with Pipermail, the dated but well known interface to Mailman archives.
To make the list archives more accessible you can get Nabble and Gmane (and maybe MARC and others) to archive the list. Gmane provides a web and news interface to mailing lists. Nabble provides various web-based formats (e.g. threaded tree view, forum-like) based on viewer preference.
