Purchased! - New lathe parts for bowl turning

Proposal Type:
Micro

Proposer:
Conall McGinty - Wood Group

Description:
Two items:

  • A lathe thread converter

The thread converter will allow us to be able to mount our existing chuck onto the newly purchased lathe. This will enable members to create bowls, and other “face turning” projects. Currently the lathe will only support spindle turning projects (baseball bats, etc).

The wormwood screw / screw chuck will allow blanks to be loaded onto the lathe when doing face work. It is possible to do face work without this, however this makes it much easier, and you lose much less wood.

The only ongoing maintenance will be training people on how to use the lathe, but that will be handled by members of the wood team.

Proposed Purchase:

Proposed Installation:

The thread adapter will live with the chuck. It will stay screwed in so it is ready for mounting when needed. The worm wood screw will stay near the lathe.

We are going to build a table for the lathe to be mounted on, there will be some small storage area for these items so they don’t get lost.

Budget:
£23.90 - lathe thread converter (including postage).

Total payment: £23.90

No ongoing costs are required, a one time purchase!

Funding type:
Fully funded by Hackspace

Health & Safety
Does this need a risk assessment or is it already covered by an existing one? Does it need inductions to use? Who will make these processes?

I think this is a great idea!! Personally I would love to train on the lathe next year and making )bowls would definitely be up my alley so to speak!
Count me in as a Board member +1

+1

we already have a wood worm screw, its mentioned during training, we also have a lathe thats built for turning bowls.
its being attached to the new lathe table. but if people wish to buy more lathe parts thats fine

@FoodNoTear any ideas where the woodworm screw lives? I’ve looked everywhere but I’ve been unable to locate it.

If I can confirm it’s at the space then we can get rid of that line item.

The thread adapter would still be good to use the chuck on the new lathe though.

In the lathe tool box I found yesterday as it had been miss placed it’s with the pedestal lathe currently

Fantastic! I’ll confirm it’s there tomorrow when I’m in the space and then we can take that part off this request. Cheers for pointing it out

Board + 1 from me :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve found the wood worm screw (thanks to Alex for pointing that out).

I’ve put it in the box with the chuck so it’s all living together. This means this proposal is now just £23.90.

Looks like we’re hot to trot on this proposal! Should I just order the thing?

Yep.
