Hi guys!
I saw on your website that you have a laser cutter, which I might need for
my future project…
I’d like to engrave a panel of wood with some bits of another darker wood,
probably spruce and mahogany.
I’ve never worked with a laser cutter before, and I read that you guys had
some issues with engraving dark materials… was it black and red?
So… do you reckon is it feasible? I attached an image just to give you an
idea of the design…
Thanks!
Paolo
Hi Paolo.
This issue was when you are defining a part to be engraved / cut in the
laser cutter software. Dark materials themselves work fine

Hi Bob,
thank you for your quick answer! So cutting shouldn’t be an issue then…
perfect!
What about engraving? Is it possible to dig a groove of just 1 mm depth in
the light wood where I can then slot in what I cut from the dark wood?
Thanks again!

Hi Paolo,
As Tas says, that will work.
Personally, I’d suggest cutting out sections of your different wood, and
sticking them on a single backing board. This will be a lot faster and use
less laser time (engrave is sloooooow)
http://www.cutlasercut.com/blog/how-to-laser-cut-wood-veneers-for-marquetry-inlays
is a good guide on the basics.

Hi guys,
thank you for your answers! Bob, I came across that page a while ago, I’ll
give it proper reading now
By the way, I’m trying to figure out how
visicut works, because in the dropdown menus I have no materials, no
lasercutting machines, no thickness…
Thanks

Hi Paolo,
We wont let you use the laser cutter without an induction which includes
how to set up Visicut and ensuring you have the correct settings for our
laser cutter.
HACMan members can sign up for inductions via
http://wiki.hacman.org.uk/Laser_Cutter/inductions
Hope that helps

Hi folks.
I’ve just finished setting up my direct debit to become a member of the group and was wondering if we could arrange a laser cutter introduction sometime soon? I checked the website and it must be out of date.
I know I’m being a bit keen but its really very exciting to be able to diy after all the issues I’ve had with outsourcing to big companies.
Many thanks,
Boz
Hi Boz,
I’ve just updated the page (sorry about that). If you want an induction
sooner than that give me a shout off list (tamarisk@tamarisk.it) and I’ll
see what I can do
