Saturday 15th July 2023 | Summer Hack-the-Space Day!

Our Summer Hack the Space Day/party will take place on 15th July!

We will combine work and play with ‘Hack the Space’ taking place in the day, and a party/chill time in the evening. Details TBC.

What is a Hack the Space day
It’s a day where members come together to improve the space and meet other folks. This could be by fixing, building, cleaning, or generally improving the unit. We plan what needs to be done beforehand (see below) and there is usually one or two people on the day assigning jobs.

What do I need to do
Turn up on the day with a can-do attitude and a decent breakfast inside you. If there are particular jobs you’d like to do, you can discuss in this thread.

Do I really have to come in for a whole day
No. Even a couple of hours is really helpful. We’ll likely be working from 0900ish until the evening with some possible spillover into Sunday.

Will there be perks
As well as the warm and fuzzy feeling you’ll get from making the Hackspace a better place, there will be pizza provided at lunchtime for those helping out and food/drinks later on. It’s also a great opportunity to meet other makers.

:blue_car: Tip drivers wanted
HTS days typically generate a lot of rubbish. If anyone is prepared to do a few runs to the tip in their car or van, that would be really useful.

Suggest items in the discussion and they can be added in.

Pre-event

  • Check we have all the supplies we need.

General

  • Move cleaning racks/shelves into the toilet. @NathanIsTallAndCool to lead
  • Fix remaining PPE and cleaning boards to the wall.
  • Addition of strike plate emergency exit to front door.
  • Create pool table top and fix bits and bobs on pool table.
  • Rejig notice board
  • Install kitchen cupboards
  • Building under stage storage @Marcus6275 to lead

Visual Arts

  • Audit grey craft cupboard checking supplies are labelled and in correct location.
  • Move big laser cutter into new location.

Woody

  • Finish router table in woodwork
  • Clear out the large pieces of wood in the CNC Room
  • Sort out the scraps pile, removing all the crappy scraps.
  • Work bench drawers need gluing together speak to @Marcus6275
  • Plenty of smaller jobs in woodwork, again speak to @Marcus6275 (Mark Dale)

Metal

  • Make rack for G-clamps
  • Use track saw to trim edges of large central bench, paying attention not to hit screws or metal hardware and minimising any sawdust. You can do the 10-min online induction for that tool here.
  • In back room, swap metal cupboard and grinding bench so that users have more room when grinding
  • Screw grinders onto bench using 50mm wood screws
  • Affix spark/eye guards onto grinder (I will bring these in on Sat AM and leave in drawer under grinding bench)
  • Fit scotchbrite-type wheel to grinder (as above)
  • Affix grinder safety info to wall (currently in drawer under bench)
  • Using label maker, label milling tooling so users can quickly see what’s what without having to open boxes
  • Build/scavenge a small box to keep tapping drills, fill it with relevant metric drills, and mark it clearly. I will put some in my storage slot (21C), and the rest can be taken from larger sets.
  • Move bandsaw into back room. In its place, put the wheeled cabinet that’s currently in the main area with old drill chargers on it. Clear any unnecessary equipment from this new cabinet and repurpose it as a stand for tooling required when using the lathes. This will stop people from leaving spanners etc. on the metrology bench.
  • Tidy up any other area that needs tidying/re-org. E.g. tooling under the Warco, top of metrology table, hand tool area.
  • Buy/make/find a drip pan to go on the floor under the Myford headstock. Clean current oily floor first.
  • Clear back room of building equipment: sand, cement, etc. etc. Goal is to have this more usable as a proper fabrication area in the near future. Could the scaffolding also move?
  • Clean/photograph large MIG welder and put it on eBay collection only. If we get any money for it, then we’ve done well.
  • There are two or three giant lathe tool holders on the grey cabinet covered in brick dust. Clean them up because we can sell those online as well to fund QC tooling for the Warco.

Storage

  • Audit large project storage and remove offending projects
  • Declutter regular members’ storage area
  • Install new shelving.

Other

  • Update the notice board area.
  • Sort through unlabelled boxes in the space, checking if the space needs the items, and labelling the box if so. Not for personal objects, more for random boxes of wires etc.
  • Fix (or form a plan to), bin or sell broken things.

For the visual arts area, I’d like to suggest going through the grey cupboard and other storage areas, checking boxes are labelled.

  • moving the cleaning racks/shelves into the toilet.
Means the cleaning stuff is all in one obvious place and it’s by the door. It’s currently all hidden behind the admin area.

  • Fix PPE and cleaning boards to the wall (the ones that are still floating around).

  • Addition of strike plate emergency exit to front door. (We already have the parts for this - speak to Connor - @Cone

  • Create pool table top and fix bits and bobs on pool table.

@DominiqueTink was leading on updating the notice board area. Is there anything that can be done during HTSD dominique? A repaint? A reshuffle?

@Team_Lasercutter i’m chatting to @Harvinder_Atwal about picking up the timber for the laser bench next week. Is this something that could be put together/ducting etc. installed at the HTSD?

@peterdroberts is there anything else we need to sort in the kitchen? We never really ‘officially opened’ that area.

@Team_Visual_Arts is there anything we can do towards the ‘hack VA’ that was planned?

One of the things I’ve been wanting to do for a while is to make it easier for people who want to help out with cleaning the space to find all the materials to do so, so happy to take the lead on setting up the cleaning space in the toilet.

We still have some wall units we could mount for the kitchen, but the basic thing is in order I believe.

To do: Make a dent in the list of jobs in the welding room. Even while welding can’t happen, there’s a lot of v. useful fabrication equipment that we could be using in there.

Folks, I am now tentative for this. A friend of mine passed away recently and the funeral is on the 15th. I still intend to crack on with the jobs, but this particular day might not be possible.

I’ll try and post up a list of metalwork jobs in here and a physical list in the workshop and drop off some of the pieces for a new bench.

Count me in. Where is the form to register rsvp for 15 th july

No need mate. Just turn up on the day ready to help.

I’m currently planning on building some storage for under the stage. I’ve asked the board for a few sheets of ply from emerge to build them out of. The design will hopefully be quick and simple to build but any help would be appreciated. I will need help sorting though all the crap that has accumulated under the stage though.

We have a few small projects in woody that members could make for the storage rack by the door.
Additionally several of the work bench drawers still need gluing together. They currently are only screwed together, but due to being made out of MDF they need glue before they can be used to prevent them being pulled apart. I can advise what needs doing on the day if someone is interested in doing that. We should still have enough wood PVA left over as I bought a 5l tub a couple weeks ago.

Im my absence, I’m noting a bunch of things that could be good to do in the metal workshop, in no particular order:

  1. Use track saw to trim edges of large central bench, paying attention not to hit screws or metal hardware and minimising any sawdust. You can do the 10-min online induction for that tool here.
  2. In back room, swap metal cupboard and grinding bench so that users have more room when grinding
  3. Screw grinders onto bench using 50mm wood screws
  4. Affix spark/eye guards onto grinder (I will bring these in on Sat AM and leave in drawer under grinding bench)
  5. Fit scotchbrite-type wheel to grinder (as above)
  6. Affix grinder safety info to wall (currently in drawer under bench)
  7. Using label maker, label milling tooling so users can quickly see what’s what without having to open boxes
  8. Build/scavenge a small box to keep tapping drills, fill it with relevant metric drills, and mark it clearly. I will put some in my storage slot (21C), and the rest can be taken from larger sets.
  9. Move bandsaw into back room. In its place, put the wheeled cabinet that’s currently in the main area with old drill chargers on it. Clear any unnecessary equipment from this new cabinet and repurpose it as a stand for tooling required when using the lathes. This will stop people from leaving spanners etc. on the metrology bench.
  10. Tidy up any other area that needs tidying/re-org. E.g. tooling under the Warco, top of metrology table, hand tool area.
  11. Buy/make/find a drip pan to go on the floor under the Myford headstock. Clean current oily floor first.
  12. Clear back room of building equipment: sand, cement, etc. etc. Goal is to have this more usable as a proper fabrication area in the near future. Could the scaffolding also move?
  13. Clean/photograph large MIG welder and put it on eBay collection only. If we get any money for it, then we’ve done well.
  14. There are two or three giant lathe tool holders on the grey cabinet covered in brick dust. Clean them up because we can sell those online as well to fund QC tooling for the Warco.

The tension is building, the pizzas are ordered, the day is nearly here! :pizza::pizza::pizza::pizza:
