Saturday 2nd December 2023 | Community Hack-the-Space Day!

Hello lovely members and forum readers, it’s time for another Hack-the-Space Day! :rocket:

As part of our commitment to have more frequent Hack-the-space days, we’ll be hosting another on Saturday 2nd of December, with some rollover onto Sunday 3rd for any outstanding tasks.

There’s a list below of tasks, but by all means, feel free to begin them before the day. Funding is available through the usual purchase proposal system.

Big thanks to everyone who’s helped compile the to-do list so far - If you’d like anything added to the list below of tasks to tackle, comment on this post and I’ll add them.

If you’re keen to lead one of the items below, let me know! – looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday the 2nd! :star2:

What is a Hack the Space Day
It’s a day where members come together to improve the space and meet other folks. This could be by fixing, building, cleaning, or generally improving the unit. We plan what needs to be done beforehand (see below) and there is usually one or two people on the day assigning jobs.

What do I need to do
Turn up on the day with a can-do attitude and a decent breakfast inside you. If there are particular jobs you’d like to do, you can discuss in this thread.

Do I really have to come in for a whole day
No. Even a couple of hours is really helpful. We’ll likely be working from 0900ish until the evening with some possible spillover into Sunday.

Will there be perks
As well as the warm and fuzzy feeling you’ll get from making the Hackspace a better place, there will be pizza provided at lunchtime for those helping out and food/drinks later on. It’s also a great opportunity to meet other makers.

:blue_car: Tip drivers wanted
HTS days typically generate a lot of rubbish. If anyone is prepared to do a few runs to the tip in their car or van, that would be really useful.

I’ll bring the cake and ice cream and handle the eating of it if everyone’s busy :yum:

@edena Someone’s got to do it :saluting_face:

I have been bringing in some decent-quality kitchen cabinets, which you might have seen helpfully ‘donated’ in the toilet :smirk:

I’m happy to put some of these up in the Kitchen above the sink. Or anywhere useful? I have a lot.

Metal: Fix belt tensioning mechanism on yellow pillar drill

I built the pool table cover today, so that’s done.

I think @Marcus6275 installed the evo mitre saw yesterday as well.

  • Metal - get the old bandsaw listed for sale (preferably in advance of the HtSD) @mikeh ?

  • Storage - a warnings been sent out now, so anything on the floor of the regular members storage area needs moving out. We need to get a bit more strict on this.

  • Restocking consumables we’re missing

  • Woodworking measuring tools shadow boards
I never got around to making three of the shadows boards that were described in this proposal. The proposal was approved/most of the items are on the consumables list. The black paint for shadow boards is in my storage box. Would be a fun little project for an amater woodworker!

I think selling the old one relies on me having the new one up and running (incl. RA and quiz) before then. That might happen it might not. I’ll try my best!

What is laser stock storage? Is it buying more laser stock or rearranging storage?

I suggested this as a hack-the-space item. The idea being partitioning the Bluey base for storage of different size & types of materials, off the back of @edena reaching out potential sizes & materis to restock.

See the “Storage Spaces” sheet here: Laser Materials Stocklist - Google Tabellen

Nothing final re: potential partitions & layout, of course.

I am probably going to end up at Howarth’s timber at some point this week.

If we need anything fetching from there, could you let me know by tomorrow evening. I can fit sheets of ply and osb in my van. They have a panel saw, but they don’t use it on weekends. If you want stuff cutting, please mark it up on a bit of paper for me to give to them.

I’d rather not do another run on saturday as parking is a pain, and howarths is only open until midday.

Because of family stuff, I’ll be in later in the day during the afternoon and evening rather than the morning. Just a heads up really. If anyone has queries about any metal jobs that want doing during the morning, give me a shout.

Metal todo: Build little wooden step for guillotine (to help people reach the treadle if required)
