Hi Everyone!
Some of you know that there is already a shared Hackspace IRC channel
on the freenode network [1], but I’ve been thinking for a while that
we need a shared mailing list. Those of you in the North may know
about the very popular GeekUp [2] mailing list which supports a series
of GeekUp local events across the North - allowing the attendees of
these dispersed and widely different events to share ideas, discuss
issues with projects and help each other out with problems.
I’m trying to emulate the success the GeekUp list has had in the North
for technology meetings, for Hackspaces across the UK. I was at a
BarCamp event this weekend where I was fortunate enough to meet with a
variety of members from several hackspaces across the NW. In a
discussion with one person, I said that part of the reason we’d
created a separate mailing list for the Stockport meetings was to
"spare" the NW-Hack-Space mailing list from the boring administrivia
of running the group, but one thing he said was that he’d rather have
known that their hackspace wasn’t the only hackspace with issues.
Now, the last thing I want to do is to move your local content away
from your local mailing lists, but I think it’d be great to have one
place to post things like “I found this really GREAT project that you
might be interested in”, or “We’re thinking of creating this kit,
would anyone else be interested in some of these?” or “My X isn’t
working, has anyone got any suggestions on how to fix it?” while
things like “We’ve got an AGM coming up” or “We’re changing the locks
on Monday and if you’ve not paid your dues, you won’t have a new
key”… well, they probably don’t need to be on this list.
OK, so the other reason is so my CC list doesn’t get so huge
The new list is at http://groups.google.com/group/uk-hackspaces but
you should be able to sign up without a Google account by sending an
e-mail to uk-hackspaces+subscribe@googlegroups.com
Obviously, this is a bit of an experiment - if it gets too busy, then
we’ll probably need to put some rules in place to help the members,
and if it’s not used at all, then we’ll have to can it off, but until
then… enjoy Also, I know I’ve missed some group mailing lists
off, so if you’re on other lists, please pass it on
All the best,
