Hi Guys,

When I arrived to open MadLab on Saturday morning at about 8am I was rather distressed to find that the shutter for 42 was up and the main door was ajar.

I checked the space, and all the other doors in the building at the time, there was no one there and fortunately no harm was done, however on my way back out I realised we were still marked as in.

If you are the last person out of space:

Check the building!

If there’s no one else in (don’t forget to check the toilets) please make sure you shut the door fully and close/lock the shutters.

If there is someone else in the building make sure you mark us as OUT so they know they can close the shutter when they leave.

(Should we have a sign to this effect on the back of the door?)

There are two things that we could do:

  1. All new members could be given a “handbook” which points important
stuff out to them like the procedures for leaving the space. It’s
likely that the last person to leave just didn’t know about the
    temporary shutter key.

  2. The outside door needs to be fixed. Right now it only reliably
closes when it’s slammed and checked, and this sort of stuff is going
to keep happening while that is the case. People are fallible.

I don’t know about likely, possible certainly although I do make a point of trying to make sure everyone knows of the existence of the emergency key. It’s equally possible that they weren’t in fact the last person to leave the building as a whole and that the shutter was left up by someone unrelated to backspace.

  1. The outside door needs to be fixed. Right now it only reliably

The front door lock is an ongoing saga. The last time someone from building maintenance did anything about it they rendered it impossible to close for about a week until someone came to “un-fix” it.

This is not about approbation of blame it’s about trying to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.

So moving forward:

I am planning to print and laminate “last one out” type instructions for the inside of the door to hackspace. Things that need to be on the list:

Check benches are isolated, all equipment turned off etc.
Check everything is turned off in the kitchen (coffee pot, hot plate etc)
Turn off lights in the quiet room and clock (remote to your right), turn off main lights
Check the building on your way out:
If there’s no one else in (don’t forget to check the toilets) please make sure you shut the door fully and close/lock the shutters.
If there is someone else in the building make sure you mark us as OUT so they know they can close the shutter when they leave.

Anything else?

I’m thinking we also need to add a general sign to the back of the front
door, and the column to your right as you come in, with

“PLEASE CHECK THE FRONT DOOR IS CLOSED BEHIND YOU, SOMETIMES IT DOESN’T
LATCH PROPERLY”

Or something to that effect. On 18 March 2014 12:01, tamarisk kay tamarisk.kay@gmail.com wrote:
