Hey All,
Just bought an aluminium vent grille for the new bed on my laser cutter,
but its painted. Not a massive problem (worst case i just ignore it and
run as-is), but i’d like to get the paint off it if possible.
It is this model: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180856445041
First thought is to use paint stripper (obviously!), but i’m having trouble
finding out if you need to scrub the paint off after soaking it in the
stripper. Since it has lots of internal bits that need to be de-painted ,
I dont think i’ll be able to get into all the corners to scrub the paint
off.
Anyone done anything like this before? Any recommendations on paint
strippers you’ve used? Will they harm aluminium?
Ta,
Bob
Bob,
There are specific paint stripper products for removing paint and
powder coating on aluminium. You need to find a paint stripper
compound which doesn’t use dichloromethane or methanol or other polar
solvents as these will eat into the aluminium. I’m not a chemist I
just learnt this from hours of having to clean chemically sensitive
parts inside mass spectrometers! From what I remember we used a
benzyl alcohol based paint stripper. It wasn’t great but it didn’t
damage the metal work and isn’t as nasty on human skin (still wear
gloves and goggles).
I found this stuff called peel away 7 which claims to do the job. I
can’t remember what I used before, but having read the details there
are different types of peel away. Make sure you get number 7.

I tried to find some nasty-but-effective paintstripper recently and I
think the methylene chloride ones have been taken off the market now,
and you can only get the ‘eco’ ones. They work, but nothing like as
well as the old ones

Enlighten me… why is leaving it painted a cause for concern?

the problem with this one is that its a paste, so i wont be able to
easily apply it (the mesh squares are 1cm x 1cm x 1cm). At this point i
think I’m going to leave it painted and see what happens!

The laser hitting it might cause some fumes? On 30 April 2012 17:04, Barry Carter barry.carter@gmail.com wrote:

Hi Bob,
I wouldn’t use paint stripper on that. Sand blasting will de-paint it much
better (and less messy).

Ooh, hadn’t even thought of sandblasting it, will have to get some media
and break out Kompressor!On 1 May 2012 00:32, Jonathan Wilson fast21@gmail.com wrote:
