Wednesday 22nd

Hey All,

Remember its not a regular HAC:Man session on wednesday. DIY:Bio are
meeting, and want us to help them out by building some lab equipment. If
you want to help with this, come along tomorrow.

-Bob

Do they mention which lab equipment they are wanting??

Just out of curiosity!!! I may not be able to make it anyway…

They’re after a mini centrifuge (designing something dremelfuge based, but
with added safety screens), a thermal cycler (PCR) and Gel BoxesOn 21 June 2011 20:26, Alexander Lang alexanderlang1980@googlemail.comwrote:

Once upon a time, in a Lab far,far away…
Somebody came up with the Polymerase Chain Reaction for DNA amplification.

The reaction has 3 phases to it, and each phase has a different optimum temperature.

So, heating and cooling your little test tubes…

Phase 1 temperature A held for X seconds
Phase 2 temperature B held for Y seconds
Phase 3 temperature C held for Z seconds

This temperature change sequence is then repeated 30 or 40 times.

This used to be done manually, transferring test tubes between heated water baths at different temperatures.
Eventually someone got fed up with this, and came up with a machine to do it - A thermocycler.
