WIki hack session, 8th September (Tomorrow, Tuesday) 7pm

Hi all

Some of the people interested in the HacMan wiki will be meeting in
the space tomorrow at 7pm to try and address some of the problems
people have with the current wiki. We might end up just discussing
things, or we might make major changes, but I’ll do my best to make
sure any changes are reversible in case there are objections from wiki
users who can’t make it to the space tomorrow.

Jim

Uh, this is an online meetup using IRC just to be clear. Myself and Tom are
in Lancaster

It’s both Online and Offline meeting as far as i’m aware…

I didn’t realise we were doing it on IRC as well, but that’s fine, so
let me rephrase: I’ll do my best to make sure any changes are
reversible in case there are objections from wiki users who can’t make
it to the meeting tomorrow.

Hi Jim,

From what I understand I think it’ll just be discussion, and perhaps moving
or removing a couple of pages (correct me if I’m wrong)
software wise I don’t think anything can be changed untill ldap support is
setup for authentication, and I think that’s still outstanding at the
moment (one of the things to talk about tomorrow)
I think the original wiki setup had a lot of hacks in to work with
wordpress authentication, so any upgrades to mediawiki or replacements or
other options would probably need ldap setting up first to avoid that sort
of thing, so that probably rules out any big changes anywayOn Monday, September 7, 2015 at 2:23:28 PM UTC+1, Jim MacArthur wrote:

The event will mainly be dealing with the wiki as it is - cleaning up,
creating links, removing and merging dead pages etc. We are not going to be
playing admin, this is, looking forward, a clearup and asessment of what we
have at the moment, with some discussion on the way.

Thanks,

We’ve had a successful evening in the space and online - thanks to
everyone who helped out. Here’s a rough summary of what we did:

  • Took a full backup of the site’s files and database - which I’ll try
to set up a regular schedule for
  • Added the CategoryTree plugin, which you can see on the sidebar on
the left of the wiki. This isn’t perfect yet - the tree links point to
pages in the Category namespace, and in some cases most of the content
is in the Main namespace instead. There are at least two ways we can
    fix this.
  • Removed the “Tools” category since “Equipment” is a sufficiently similar term
  • Added a three-column banner to the front page (this needs some cosmetic work)
  • Added a few more pages for some equipment and removed a lot more old ones

There’s more that I can’t remember right now - please feel free to add
or correct.

Let us know what you think - although we’ll probably still be working
on this for a week or so after this, so you might give us a chance to
file down some of the edges. On 8 September 2015 at 00:22, Chris Hilliard badspyro@gmail.com wrote:
